TODAYS FIRE DANGER LEVEL

Eastern Area – LOW
(Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Philadelphia)

Northern Area –LOW
(Berks, Lehigh, Northampton)

Southern AreaLOW
(Lancaster, Chester)

High fire danger means all fine dead fuels ignite readily and fires start easily from most causes.  Unattended brush and camp fires are likely to escape.  Fires spread rapidly and short distance spotting is common.  Fires may become serious and their control difficult unless they are attacked successfully while small.  Outdoor burning should be restricted to early morning and late evening hours.

Introduction
The Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry is charged with the responsibility of protecting the
Commonwealth’s wildlands from wildfire. Any uncontrolled fire burning…”any woodlot, forest or wild-land, or property, material, or vegetation being or growing therein”… is considered to be a wildfire. The Bureau depends very heavily upon volunteer Forest Fire Wardens, trained crew members and local fire service agencies to suppress these fires. This course was developed to recognize and certify fire fighters who meet established minimum criteria for wildland firefighting. Those individuals who attain a basic level of training and skill by completing this course in conjunction with S-190 (Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior) will be recognized as CERTIFIED WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS in Pennsylvania.

Electrical hazards are one of the most dangerous threats to wildland firefighters. Under heavy smoke conditions and in wooded areas, firefighters may not even know power lines are in the vicinity unless proper pre-fire planning has been completed.
